Mar 11 - Festival of States Clown School St. Petersburg, Florida, USA

The Suncoasters of St. Petersburg are NOW accepting registration forms for the 2010 Festival of States Clown Alley Clown School, sponsored by All Children�s Hospital. This popular program has been a tradition of the Festival of States since 1972. Christine Davison, a graduate of the famed Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Clown School, teaches character definition, make-up, costuming and performance techniques during the five week series. Both children and adults are welcome to participate and all graduates will be invited to show off their new skills in the Festival of States Iluminated Night Parade on Thursday, March 25th and the Festival Day Parade on Saturday, April 10th. The five classes will be held on Thursdays - February 11th, 18th, 25th, March 4th and 11th. All classes are held at All Children�s Hospital Education Conference Center, 710 4th St. S., St. Petersburg from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The cost is $17 per person, plus $5 for each additional family member. Fee includes instruction for all five classes and a Clown Alley T-shirt. �Watching families work together is so rewarding,� Davison said. �Most adults just come to watch their children at first, but they get caught up in it. Introduction to the Art of Clowning with Marie Beck. This 36-hour course of instruction offered by HVCC will introduce students to the ancient and honorable profession of clowning. Students will learn what a clown is, what a clown does, where a clown performs, basic make-up application techniques, costume and wardrobe selection and introductory clown skills. Course fee of $250.00 includes a textbook, makeup kit, and one year membership to Clowns of America. It starts February 12, concludes May 12, consists of 12 sessions and graduation is set for May 19. Slapstick is the comic expression of a physical conflict. This conflict may be between individuals, between a person and an object, or between a person and his environment. This class offers instruction and development of comedy trips, falls, slaps, kicks, and comic uses of props. This is an ongoing class with rolling open admission. Students may choose to pay for one class at a time or purchase a month pass. The class operates similar to a yoga or martial arts class, where students of all skill levels are encouraged to come to �workout� and further develop technique. Borrowing ideas from martial arts training such as Kata and Waza the Slapstick Dojo aims to teach slapstick technique as well as classic slapstick gag structure. Each session of the dojo will include conditioning exercises, choreography of original or classic acts, and instruction in specific skills, methods, and moves of slapstick greats from silent films, circuses, and contemporary physical comedy. Character Mask to Clown With Deborah Kaufmann Inspired by the teachings of Richard Pochinko, Canadian clown master teacher Sundays and Thursdays; 5 weeks March 21 through April 22, 2010 (First Day of Spring to Earth Day). March 21 3-8 pm, Then Thursdays, 6-9 pm, Sundays, 4-7 pm "If we face the six directions of self, we can't help but laugh at the beauty and ridiculousness of all that we are." -- Richard Pochinko This investigation is an inspiring way for the artist to make direct connection to aspects of his/her true self. In the spirit of physical discovery and playfulness we will visit our childhood room, experience a bittersweet goodbye, and find the personal meaning in the colors of the rainbow. Then we will each make six masks: North, West, South, East, Above and Below. We will connect to and physicalize each direction and then create a clay mask. The masks are explored and a character is developed for each one. All six characters are combined to create a persona that is unique, with a deeply personal mythology and imagined environment that can be used for exploration and the development of new material. The tentative agenda being to have Sean Carlock teach comedy movement, and perhaps stilt walking, and underwater basket weaving. Scoop is doing to do a juggling workshop, and possibly a beginning balloon workshop. Plus, Fred and Tricia's wonderful classes. I am not sure what Cheri would be teaching. Also, We are planning on Having Anna Willinski (an award willing Face and Body artist) come on Saturday to do a face painting workshop.
