<title>Sep 8 - Slapstick Dojo
New York, New York, USA</title>
<link>http://ecal.bcbanex.com/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi?CalendarName=ClownEvents&amp;EventID=398&amp;Date=2010%2F9%2F8</link>
<description>Slapstick is the comic expression of a physical conflict. This conflict may be between individuals, between a person and an object, or between a person and his environment.

This class offers instruction and development of comedy trips, falls, slaps, kicks, and comic uses of props. This is an ongoing class with rolling open admission. Students may choose to pay for one class at a time or purchase a month pass.

The class operates similar to a yoga or martial arts class, where students of all skill levels are encouraged to come to “workout” and further develop technique.

Borrowing ideas from martial arts training such as Kata and Waza the Slapstick Dojo aims to teach slapstick technique as well as classic slapstick gag structure.

Each session of the dojo will include conditioning exercises, choreography of original or classic acts, and instruction in specific skills, methods, and moves of slapstick greats from silent films, circuses, and contemporary physical comedy.

First Class is FREE! Come to any class and and try it out for free.

Class taught by Joel Jeske and Christopher Lueck.

<title>Sep 15 - Slapstick Dojo
New York, New York, USA</title>
<link>http://ecal.bcbanex.com/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi?CalendarName=ClownEvents&amp;EventID=398&amp;Date=2010%2F9%2F15</link>

<title>Sep 18 - Physical Comedy with John Towsen
Brooklyn, New York, USA</title>
<link>http://ecal.bcbanex.com/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi?CalendarName=ClownEvents&amp;EventID=488&amp;Date=2010%2F9%2F18</link>
<description>A hands-on crash course in physical comedy vocabulary for clowns, mimes, actors, and everyone in between. Technique leads to application in short pieces, with an emphasis on character interaction, gag structure, and storytelling. Skills are centered around working with your partner (counterweights, levers, mounts, lifts, partner tumbling) and with the physical world around you (tables, chairs, doors, props, etc.). Some performance experience and a reasonably sound body highly recommended, but all levels of experience welcome.

JOHN TOWSEN has taught full-length physical comedy courses at Princeton University, Ohio University, and the Juilliard School (the latter two for six years each), plus numerous shorter workshops, most recently at the Nouveau Clown Institute in Barcelona. He has many famous former students but doubts he had anything to do with their success. His once-upon-a-time performance career included 7 years of television acting as a child growing up in New York and a decade of clowning as an adult, from the elementary schools of Long Island to the sands of Saudi Arabia, most of it with partner Fred Yockers. In his other lives he teaches multimedia and digital video in the Creative Arts &amp; Technology program at Bloomfield College, and spends his summers working for the Open Society Institute doing media training for activists in hot spots across the globe. He is the author of Clowns (1976) and was artistic director for the first two New York international clown theatre festivals (1983, 1985). His latest research on physical comedy is to be found on his blog: physicalcomedy.blogspot.com

<title>Sep 22 - Slapstick Dojo
New York, New York, USA</title>
<link>http://ecal.bcbanex.com/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi?CalendarName=ClownEvents&amp;EventID=398&amp;Date=2010%2F9%2F22</link>

<title>Sep 25 - Physical Comedy with John Towsen
Brooklyn, New York, USA</title>
<link>http://ecal.bcbanex.com/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi?CalendarName=ClownEvents&amp;EventID=490&amp;Date=2010%2F9%2F25</link>

<title>Sep 29 - Slapstick Dojo
New York, New York, USA</title>
<link>http://ecal.bcbanex.com/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi?CalendarName=ClownEvents&amp;EventID=398&amp;Date=2010%2F9%2F29</link>

<title>Sep 30 - NYOSA Fall Session
Corning, New York, USA</title>
<link>http://ecal.bcbanex.com/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi?CalendarName=ClownEvents&amp;EventID=376&amp;Date=2010%2F9%2F30</link>
<description>The Fall 2010 New York - Ontario Shrine Association meetings will be
conducted September 30, October 1 and October 2 in Corning, NY. Meeting
details and registration info are on the NYOSA web site.
A Clown Festival will be part of the doings beginning at 6 PM, Friday
evening October 1. ALL Clown unit members, their Ladies and family
members who are into clowning around and attending the NYOSA meetings
are encouraged to be part of things.
The NYOSA Clown Festival will start on Friday evening at 6 PM with
registration in the Cayuga Room. At 6:30 PM we will present the first of
three 50 minute classes/workshops. The classes/workshops scheduled are:
6:30 PM…What Does An Audience Want
7:30 PM…Fun With Balloons, Entertaining With Balloons
8:30 PM…Make Me Laugh…Skits, Bits, Walks Ons &amp; Adlibs
Each class will focus on and emphasize laughter in clown performance.
On Saturday morning, October 2, after breakfast, we will continue with a
roving registration, and ALL the clowns will participate in the NYOSA
parade. The parade will form at the back of the hotel. At the conclusion of
the parade, we will get together for a clown appearance critique. Our
Festival coaches will rate your overall appearance as Excellent, Good or
Needs Attention. Supporting comments for self improvement may be
offered if a coach feels it is appropriate. After lunch, and the NYOSA
programs that follow, we will have a “Laughter Free-For-All“. In other
words, you will perform in your favorite routines in your favorite manner for
the NYOSA Shriners and their Ladies around the hotel. They, in turn, will
rate your performance…I let loose with a belly laugh…I laughed heartily…I
laughed…I snickered &amp; giggled…I grinned…I smiled. At the conclusion of
the Laughter Free-For-All, score sheets will be collected and tallied while
you are enjoying some late afternoon hospitality and relaxation.
The following awards will be presented after dinner: The 2010 NYOSA
Golden Nose Award, presented to the clown who accumulates the most
points during the festival. The Funniest Clown Award, presented to the
clown who generated the most laughter during the parade and the “Laughter
Free-For- All”. The Pote’s Clown will be presented to the clown who Ill
Mel, and the NYOSA Vice Presidents feel best represents Shrine clowning.
Finally, we will present an Enthusiasm Award to that Shrine Clown who has
been clowning for less than two years and in the opinion of the Festival
coaches, spread the heart of clowning and enthusiasm for what we are doing
through the entire Festival.
There is no registration fee for the Clown Festival. However, each Festival
participant does have to be part of the NYOSA meetings. Guests do have to pay the NYOSA registration fee.
