Capital Region Clown Arts Festival
Loudonville New York USA
The majority of the winter classes will deal with buffoonery . What is buffoonery? Here is what one of the dictionaries we use from time to time says about buffoonery…acting like a clown or buffoon, (Yiddish) a prank or piece of clowning; "his shtik made us laugh". Clowning is an ancient and honorable performing art. In certain circles it is felt over the last fifty years or so, especially in the last 20, as clowning has migrated from the circus ring and taken a prominent place in malls, shopping centers and families’ back yards, clowning has been slanted to balloon twisting and face painting. There is a prevailing thought the art form’s newer practitioners are being short changed. If is felt that many clowns don’t know how to be funny, are not as creative as they should be and can’t entertain without a balloon or a paint brush in their hands. With that thought in mind, the CRCAF would like to emphasize some of the more traditional or “old fashioned” aspects of our art form.
Understanding what is funny and why, how to develop bits using every day events as inspiration, performing one on one and for small groups and being comfortable doing it, as well as writing and developing your own material. Yes, we have presented some of those subjects in the past, but we have never really dwelled on them. In 2009, we will!
